A little bit of history

In 1984 the West Maldon Residents Association (WMRA) was formed and with a growing number of houses being built in the vicinity the Association quickly realised that there would be an increased need for a Community centre plus open space and play equipment for both existing residents and those moving into the many new homes.

Following years of concerted campaigning, and fund raising by this team of impressive people, led by Dorreen Linton after whom the Linton room is named, the building of the West Maldon Community Centre commenced in 1993, finally opening on Saturday 17th September 1994. A formidable achievement by all involved; We remain grateful for those efforts and for the many hours of time selflessly given to achieve the wonderful legacy that exists today.

WMRA then evolved into the West Maldon Community Association (WMCA) and it's Committee, comprising of local residents, it continues to manage the centre on a voluntary basis today. The committee meet once a month on a Thursday and are always looking for new members - if you think you can help please ask any of the staff or volunteers.

The centre is owned by the Maldon District Council but leased to the WMCA for a peppercorn rent. The WMCA manages and runs the centre on behalf of the local community. It is our policy to keep prices very competitive, particularly for local clubs and and to host some events such as quiz nights and barn dances to enhance the offerings to local families.

Following on from the success of the initial building, in 2002 the committee had once again raised sufficient funds to enable the building of the much needed Jubilee lounge extension. Following on from this in 2003, the centre was extensively refurbished throughout. Sound absorbing panels were fitted in the main hall to improve the acoustics for events where music is to be played, plus all original seating was replaced.

In August 2009 a fully fitted kitchen was installed with a dish-finisher, fridge and a full range of crockery and cutlery to enable catering for up to 200 people.

Following on from this Table Tennis tables were purchased for use in the sports hall a projector screen was fitted at one end of the hall. A smaller screen was purchased for use in the Jubilee and Linton Rooms as required.

During August 2013 an even larger, electrically operated projector screen was fitted in the main hall to enable the viewing of films and maximising the viewing potential for users.

In October 2013 soundproofing was carried out to the doors between the Hall and Jubilee Lounge.

On 23rd November 2013 the first "Family Cinema Afternoon" was held at the centre. Following its popularity this facility continues to be available occasionally during the colder months of the year.

On its 20th Anniversary Celebration in September 2014 a marble plaque commemorating the opening of the centre, kindly donated by the Co-operative Funeral Services of Market Hill Maldon, was unveiled by the Chairman of Maldon District Council , Councillor Peter Elliot.

In August 2015 Air-conditioning and Heating units were installed in each room in the centre to improve comfort for hirers.

The hall has fast Wi-Fi which is free to use for all hirers and their guests, contact David or the caretakers for the password. Streaming of live programs is not permitted as we do not hold a TV Licence.

In 2018, local photographer Martin Ventris-Field offered to replace the artwork in the centre with some of his photographs of the town. These stunning images have made a huge difference to the ambiance of the centre.

It remains the committee's aim to ensure the Centre continues to be both well maintained, employing a team of dedicated Caretakers to ensure this, whilst continuing improvements and upgrades wherever possible. This will ensure that the Centre continues to meet the increasing demands of the expanding population of Maldon. The centre is generally closed for two weeks in August of every year for such work to be undertaken.
